Suraj: Tummo Retreat: With Chaphur Rinpoche (Yundrug Bon) LOCATION: 1608 BONITA ROAD SAN PABLO, CA WHEN: Wednesday, Nov 2nd - Sunday, Nov 6th, 10am-5pm DONATION: $350 GO TO THIS LINK TO REGISTER: https://goo.gl/forms/eGcWOaBO2FEnHRNi2 Please register before Sept. 15th. You can pay your admission donation through Paypal using your credit card if you prefer. Tummo is a breathing practice central to tantra practice and very helpful for Dzogchen practitioners to achieve enlightenment in this lifetime, according to Shardza Rinpoche, an accomplished Dzogchen master of the the 20th century. The root text of Tummo was written and taught by Sangchok Tharthuk Gyalpo and comes from the Mother Tantra teachings with later commentaries by Gyalshen Milu Samlek. Tummo is a practice to clear the negative emotions of this life and the karmic traces of past lives. It increases physical health and mental wellbeing. Many people have reported improvements in heart and lung health, improved concentration and memory and an overall calm and peaceful mind. The meaning of Tummo is “inner fire” and the practice is to generate and direct this heat or warmth within the body. The Tummo practice also works with the Tsa (channels), the Lung (wind or breathing) and the Tigles (light drops of consciousness) inside the channels. Through visualizing a red hot needle of iron at the junction of the three channels all of the negativities are incinerated and purified, allowing for the unification of inner wind and the mind. This 5-day retreat will go into detail about many aspects of tsa, lung and tigles. For instance, the activities that occur within the three channels or tsa are wisdom, breathing, lights, blood, drops. The nine types of Lung (breathe or wind) include samsaric, nirvanic, natural mind, wisdom and awareness. We will also discuss the two kinds of tigle drops: physical drops inside our bodies and the drops of our mind (the nature of our mind). Chaphur Rinpoche will also discuss the different kinds of breathing that can be utilized — the smooth, gentle breathing characteristic of the Jam Lung (smooth wind) practice and the Bar Lung (wrathful wind) which is more intense as it incorporates packing air into the lungs and holding for a length of time. Come to this in-depth training and gain the knowledge and experience to enhance your physical, mental and spiritual being. Tummo – a wonderful tool for the rest of your life. Join Chaphur Rinpoche for this special, five day non-residential retreat. The number of participants is limited space. Advance registration is required. Lunch will be provided. You can pay your admission donation through Paypal using your credit card if you prefer.

Suraj: Siddha Lakshmi havan at The Movement Center PDX https://www.facebook.com/events/161741287585467/permalink/161741290918800/ 17 August at 19:00–21:00 We are delighted to welcome Surendra Bir Karmacharya and his wife Dipta to Portland again. Until his recent move to Canada, Surendra Bir was the chief priest of the Vidya Peeth Agam House in Bhaktapur, Nepal. The Agam house was established in the 11th century, and Surendra Bir's family had performed tantric rituals there for over 1000 years. On Wednesday, August 17, Surendra Bir will perform a Siddha Lakshmi havan (fire ceremony) at the main havan kund on the south side of the building. All are welcome to attend and experience the blessings of this ancient practice. This event will replace our usual Wednesday evening meditation program. ================================= The fierce Siddha Lakshmi, a wrathful manifestation of the Hindu goddess Durga, was the protecting and guiding goddess of the Malla kings, who ruled Nepal’s Kathmandu Valley from the thirteenth through eighteenth century and their descendants. Here she is shown at the center of the composition standing on the hands of her consort, the great god Shiva, with her various forms occupying the registers above and below. Her name opens with the Sanskrit term “siddha” which indicates that she has mastered the art of accomplishment, and as such she is appealed to by followers for the successful completion of projects. This painting’s tightly packed composition is characteristic of Nepalese paintings, which typically fill the canvas with deities, gods, goddesses, animals, and floral motifs. Also characteristic of Nepalese works of art, this painting includes an inscription on its back that allows it to be dated to 1796. http://rubinmuseum.org/collection/artwork/siddha-lakshmi

The Heartdrops of Kuntu Zangpo presents Dzogchen teachings very directly “for those of sharp faculties.” In this section on thogal, Shardza begins an explanation of the superiority of thogal approaches over thegchod. He then continues with a description of the framework of thogal. Following Shardza’s instructions, Chaphur Rinpoche will explain and demonstrate the key points of thogal, and will lead students in these practices which include: 1) the key points of the body, the thogal postures 2) the key points of speech, silence 3) key points of mind 4) the key points of the door of the eyes, the gazes 5) the key points of the wind or breath, the proper manner of breathing There will also be a explanation of the visions or appearances that arise during thogal practice. The Yamantaka Drubchen is an intense practice with up to 17hrs of sitting per day. Please know your own capacity and ability to participate. Participating in the Yamantaka Drubchen is not anything that should cause worry or anxiety. In fact, most people who participate find it much easier to settle into this practice than other extended practices due to the fact it is so structured. The main issues participants experience are physical discomforts such as hip pain and back pain from sitting so long, please take this into account. HEALTH REQUIRMENTS / MEDICAL CONDITIONS. We ask that those participating be in good health, both physically and mentally. Please consult your doctor or medical professional if you have any outstanding health issues. Also please be aware of your fellow retreat participants including H.E. Garchen Rinpoche and how your health issues might affect others practice and the stability of the mandala. WHAT TO BRING WITH YOU / WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT. Please note that other than teeth brushing and face washing, bathing is not permitted during this retreat. Clothing may be changed if desired. Earplugs and eye shades may be used during your assigned sleep periods, and a complimentary pair of earplugs is provided. Participants should bring sleeping bags, meditation mats, and other necessities. In preparation for practicing and sleeping in the temple know that you will sit and sleep in the same spot throughout the Drubchen. Personal items, sleeping mats, and meditation mats may not exceed 31 inches in width (please note that at Garchen Rinpoche's request the width has been reduced by two inches this year in order to create two additional spaces for participants). We fit as many people into the temple as possible, and this space limitation will be strictly observed. Any excess or oversize items will be stored in the back of the dining room during the Drubchen. Practice will be conducted nonstop, with everyone practicing together from 6:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Ritual implements are not required. For the night sessions participants will be divided into three groups, which will rotate each night. When it is not your practice session you may sleep, but all Drubchen participants recite the opening and closing sections of the text for each night session. Your total sleep time per night will be approximately 5-6 hours, more often than not broken into two separate sessions. this will be your only time to lay down or rest each day. Three simple meals a day will be served, with vegetarian dishes at all meals and meat dishes served at least once a day, and with night time snack tables available. Special dietary requests regretfully can not be accommodated for this retreat (no exceptions are possible). During meals, there will be two serving sessions, with half of the practitioners eating during each session. Meal time is limited to 20-30 minutes per meal. There will be no speaking during the retreat other than the mantra recitation and the recitation of the text. The only exception will be a point indicated by the lamas on day four between the approach and accomplishment sections of the practice when participants will be allowed to speak to each other for a short period of time. Please note that no checking cell phone, voice mail messages, text messages, emails or social media is allowed the duration of the event. Any necessary communication within the mandala will be done via handwritten note. For practitioners who have difficulty sitting on the floor for long periods of time, a chair may be used where you are sitting if needed. All those requiring a chair will be assigned one of the sitting locations at the back of the temple, so as not to block others' view. It is important that all participants have seated meditation experience and realistically gauge if they are physically and mentally able to handle up to 17 hours per day of sitting. Please note that once you choose your location in the temple, you remain there throughout the Drubchen, both while awake and while sleeping at night, and may not change the location at any time. All who plan to attend the Drubchen must arrive no later than 12:00pm on February 18th and must remain for the entire duration of the Drubchen. At 12:00 p.m. the gate to the center will be closed, and no one will be allowed to enter after that point. No one will be allowed to leave early for any reason, other than a medical emergency. Suraj: The Heart Essence of the Dakinis with Chaphur Rinpoche January 14-15, 2017 10am to 4:30pm The Bonpo teachings are deep like the ocean, particularly Dzogchen teachings. Many students of Bon are familiar with Dzogchen teachings from male lineage holders and may not be aware of the many female Dzogchen practitioners who have achieved enlightenment. These female enlightened beings are known as Dakini or Khandro. The Dakinis are real-life, female practitioners who have achieved realization of the Mature of Mind through Dzogchen practice here on earth. Dakini or Khandro lineage teachings are rarely taught in the west. Therefore, Chaphur Rinpoche will offer instruction on the Heart Essence of the Thirty Signs and Meanings of the Female Lineage, The Mogyud ( Female lineage), from the Cycle of Essential Instructions of the Male and Female Lineages from the Bonpo Dzogchen teachings. During this teaching, Rinpoche will give specific instructions on how the Dakinis or Khandros practiced and achieved realization of the nature of mind. Rinpoche will teach individual Dzogchen view, meditation, conduction and result (fruit). In addition, Rinpoche will also give instructions on the heart essence of the Khandro Dzogchen lineage practices and realization songs, originating all the way back to Gyalwa Kuntu Zangpo. Suraj: Dzogchen Instructions on the Golden Essence With Chaphur Rinpoche July 25 – 30, 2017 Teaching Topic Drenpa Namkha gave the first Dzogchen oral transmission of the instructions on the Golden Essence (Dzogchen Serdam) to his disciple Shensye Lhaje in the 8th century. Since that time it has been closely guarded as one of the most important Bön Dzogchen teachings, and has only been transmitted to a select group of practitioners. The teaching gives clear instructions on how to conduct one’s life from the view of Dzogchen – a boundless mind which is clear, powerful and contains full enlightenment within its scope. As Drenpa Namkha said, “Whoever is connected with this instruction, having understood as consciousness the sound light and rays and realized the empty-essence of the nature of mind, may you be primordially awakened in space (dbyings) of the nature of Bon.” We at Gyalshen Institute feel most fortunate that Chaphur Rinpoche will impart these precious instructions, which are rarely taught in the west. It is our wish that the blessing inherent in receiving this teaching is open to all. Everyone is welcome to join us for this summer’s teaching and retreat. Suraj: Sorig Khang Portland: Traditional Tibetan Medicine Teachings on the Yuthok Nyingthig and Special Long Life Blessing with Dr Nida Chenagtsang The Yuthok Nyingthig (Tib. གཡུ་ཐོག་སྙིང་ཐིག་), the ‘Heart Essence of Yuthok’, composed by Yuthok the Younger, the great 12th Century Tibetan yogi-physician is a complete cycle of Vajrayana Buddhist practice, beginning with the preliminary practices (Tib. སྔོན་འགྲོ་ “ngöndro”) and progressing through the development and completion stage practices to the highest practices of Mahamudra and Dzogchen. It is characterized by its concise and simple methods which bring about both worldly benefits, including improved health and longevity, as well as the ultimate benefit of complete spiritual liberation. The Yuthok Nyingthig is the main spiritual practice of Tibetan physicians, and it contains many unique techniques to heighten the intuition and healing capacities of the doctor. Dr Nida, traditional Tibetan physician and meditation master from Amdo, Tibet will offer practical instruction on this very unique spiritual tradition. As part of these teachings, Dr Nida will also confer a very special 'la hooking' ritual. La energy is the subtle life force that exists within the body that can be compromised due to chronic illness, stress, physical or emotional trauma, or aggressive medical treatments. Signs of loss of la in the body can be chronic fatigue and depression. This ritual from the Yuthok Nyingthig root text involves 'hooking' back the la from the ten directions and bringing it back into one's own body in order to restore health and vitality. Location: New Renaissance Books 1338 NW 23rd Avenue Portland, OR 97210 Time: Friday December 2nd, 10AM-5PM Price: $108; $75 before November 18th Registration: www.sorigkhangportland.org/schedule/ Following these teachings Dr Nida will give a public talk introducing his new book 'Mirror of Light: A Commentary on Yuthok's Ati Yoga' and book signing. Suraj: The Six Dharmas of Vajrasanapada Bestowed by H.E. Sakya Dungse Avikrita Vajra Rinpoche Sakya Monastery of Tibetan Buddhism (Seattle) February 18, 19 & 20, 2017 Vajrasanapada the Elder was a great scholar and adept of Buddhist tantric practice in early medieval India. From him originate many practices relied upon in Tibetan Buddhism in general and the Sakya tradition in particular. Of his numerous initiations and instructions, six were so highly regarded for their profundity and efficacy that they were maintained as a rare set of practices by the early Sakya Forefathers. For the first time ever, H.E. Sakya Dungse Avikrita Vajra Rinpoche will bestow the entire set of initiations and teachings at Sakya Monastery. A practitioner may attend one, some or all of the initiations as desired, but only those who attend all six initiations may attend the special transmission at the end and will receive the full practice texts. The cost of the entire series of initiations and the Special Practice Transmission and instructions is $300 for nonmembers and $220 for members. If attending individual initiations, the fee per initiation for non-members is $40 and $30 for members. To register, please visit: sakya.org/specialevents/981-Six-Dharmas Day 1 Session 1 - Preliminary Teaching (H.E. Khöndung Abhaya Vajra Rinpoche) Saturday, February 18, 2017, 10:30 am Since the Six Dharmas of Vajrasanapada belong to the Vajrayana, which known as the uncommon resultant Mahayana system of Buddhism, it is necessary for recipients to first learn and enter the path of the common causal Mahayana by going for refuge and generating bodhicitta, the especially altruistic mind intent on attaining full enlightenment for the sake of all sentient beings. For those new to these ideas as well as those wishing to revisit the all-important principles of Buddhdharma, an in-depth preliminary teaching by H.E. Khöndung Abhaya Vajra Rinpoche will be given. Prerequisites: None. Commitment: None. Session 2 - Initiation of Marici (with transmission for a protective practice) Saturday February 18, 2017, 2 pm The practice of the ‘Goddess of the Dawn’ has been relied upon for centuries in the Sakya tradition for clearing away all outer obstacles and to transform related dissonant mental states like anxiety and stress. The initiation of Marici enables practitioners to use the sadhana and includes the transmission necessary for combining it with the Buddha’s own words for an uncommon meditation for protection and overcoming fear. Prerequisites: For those who have received the refuge vow and have aspiring Bodhicitta; only vegetarian foods may be consumed prior to the initiation. Commitment: To cultivate Bodhicitta. Session 3 - Blue Acala Saturday, February 18, 2017, 4 pm Of the various forms of the sovereign of wrathful Tutelary Deities known as the ‘Immovable One’, this uncommon initiation is of the kneeling blue form that the young Sachen Kunga Nyingpo, founding master of the Sakya tradition, famously used to dispel hindrances to his first retreat, which culminated in him receiving from Manjushri ‘Parting from the Four Forms of Clinging.’ The practice of Acala is aimed at eliminating all the inner obstacles that inhibit our spiritual and personal development on the path to enlightenment. The initiation includes a water blessing for protection from obstacles and the transmission needed for practitioners to produce their own protection-water. Prerequisites: For those who have received the refuge vow and have aspiring Bodhicitta; only vegetarian foods may be consumed prior to the initiation. Commitment: To cultivate Bodhicitta. Optional extra: Bumpa vessels may be purchased elsewhere for those who wish to do the water protection at home. Day 2 Session 4 - The Long Life Buddha at the Bodhi Tree Sunday, February 19, 2017, 10:30 am The original bodhi tree that Shakyamuni Buddha manifested full enlightenment under was in Bodh Gaya, India, where the great Vajrasanapada later resided in the early medieval period. Just as a fourth generation tree still stands there today, the blessings of Shakyamuni Buddha remain accessible to practitioners now through our unbroken lineage, and in this initiation we are introduced to the esoteric means of attaining long life based on the meditation of the Buddha at the Bodhi Tree. Prerequisites: For those who have received the refuge vow and have aspiring Bodhicitta; only vegetarian foods may be consumed prior to the initiation. Commitment: To cultivate Bodhicitta. Session 5 - Buddhalocana Sunday, February 19, 2017, 2 pm The profound healing initiation of Buddhalocana (Goddess of the Buddha’s Eyes) enables practitioners to undertake her powerful meditations and mantra for allaying all manner of pain, sickness and suffering. Prerequisites: For those who have received the refuge vow and have aspiring Bodhicitta; only vegetarian foods may be consumed prior to the initiation. Commitment: To cultivate Bodhicitta. Session 6 - The Three and a Half Syllable Avalokita Sunday, February 19, 2017, 4 pm Chenrezi, the Buddha of Compassion, is the main practice of Sakya Monastery and this initiation is for a special form of Chenrezi that aids practitioners to enjoy undisturbed sleep. The short but powerful night-time meditation of the Three and a Half Syllable practice not only averts nightmares; it also brings healing, peace and longevity. crac333:
