Suraj: This blog post by Ben Joffe offers a translation of some of the Ngakpa training curricula of the Rebkong Ngakpa community as described by Dr. Nida Chenagtsang. This is an exciting alternative to the standard monastic model that many Vajrayana practioners idealize. It may very well be that these models are much more useful (and fulfilling) for 21st century western dharma folks. den: Ronald M. Davidson - Reframing Sahaja: Genre, Representation, Ritual and Lineage (2002) One of the consequences of the paucity of critical investigations into the early medieval Indian movement known as esoteric Buddhism (Mantrayana, Vajrayana, Mantranaya, etc.) is that we maintain a relatively superficial understanding of its fundamental nomenclature and technical terminology. Despite the plethora of available resources, and even though we enjoy much greater access to living Tibetan, Japanese and Newar representatives of the movement than ever before, the situation has only slightly improved in recent decades. This essay will attempt to address questions about the semantic value and ritual history of a term that, for a while, was central to the modern understanding of later Indian Mantrayana, but which unfortunately has been bypassed in more contemporary discussions. This term is sahaja, which Tibetans have translated as “simultaneously born” (lhan cig skyes pa), and whose treatment in Indological literature has not fully engaged central questions concerning Buddhist intellectual and ritual history. http://www.filedropper.com/ronaldmdavidson-reframingsahaja-genrerepresentationritualandlineage2002

Suraj: “Erotic Asceticism: The Razor’s Edge Observance (asidhārāvrata) and the Early History of Tantric Coital Ritual” Bulletin of the School of Oriental and African Studies, 2016Shaman Hatley Shaman Hatley https://www.academia.edu/24114809/_Erotic_Asceticism_The_Razor_s_Edge_Observance_asidh%C4%81r%C4%81vrata_and_the_Early_History_of_Tantric_Coital_Ritual_ This essay examines shifting representations of the “sword’s edge observance” (asidhārāvrata) across a range of Sanskrit literary and religious texts. Originally a Brahmanical ascetic discipline, an observance (vrata) by this name is the earliest ritual involving sexual contact documented in the corpus of Śaiva tantras. In its tantric adaptation, an orthodox practice for the cultivation of sensory restraint was transformed into a means for supernatural attainment (siddhi). Diachronic study of the observance in three early Śaiva texts—the Niśvāsatattvasaṃhitā, Mataṅgapārameśvara, and Brahmayāmala—reveals changes in ritual emphases, women’s roles, and the nature of engagement in eroticism. Analysis of the asidhārāvrata thus sheds light on the early history of tantric sexual rituals, which by the end of the first millennium had become highly diverse. It is argued that the observance became increasingly obsolete with the rise of Śaiva sexual practices more magical, ecstatic, or gnostic in orientation. ---------------------------------------------------------- “Converting the Ḍākinī: Goddess Cults and Tantras of the Yoginīs between Buddhism and Śaivism” Tantric Traditions in Transmission and Translation, edited by David Gray and Ryan Richard Overbey (Oxford University Press, Oxford University Press), 2016Shaman Hatley Shaman Hatley https://www.academia.edu/24115448/_Converting_the_%E1%B8%8C%C4%81kin%C4%AB_Goddess_Cults_and_Tantras_of_the_Yogin%C4%ABs_between_Buddhism_and_%C5%9Aaivism_

Suraj: The Transmission of Buddhist Astral Science from India to East Asia - The Central Asian Connections Historia Scientiarum, 2015 Bill Mak https://www.academia.edu/12138270/2015_The_Transmission_of_Buddhist_Astral_Science_from_India_to_East_Asia_-_The_Central_Asian_Connections?email_work_card=title Among the bodies of auxiliary knowledge Buddhist missionaries brought to East Asia which had a lasting impact to the local cultures was the astral science. It comprises a broad range of related subjects such as cosmology, astronomy, metrology, calendrics, astrology and the worship of astral deities. The great interest in the subject is evinced by the fact that detailed accounts of these subjects found their way into a number of key Sanskrit Mahāyāna texts, as well as their Chinese translations such as the Śārdūlakarṇāvadāna, the Mahāsaṃnipātasūtra and Amoghavajra's Xiuyao jing. A comparison of the early Indian astral science and its East Asian version however reveals some key differences. In this paper, I will examine these differences and influences which may be attributed to Central Asian and other non-Indian sources.
